Major: Communications Studies – Human Relations

Q: Where did you work and what did they have you doing?

A: I was a Communications and Marketing intern at A Glimmer of Hope. The organization works in villages in Ethiopia. They build wells, schools, and health centers for impoverished communities. I had 3 main jobs. One of them was to update the website with new data and photos. I would copy-edit marketing materials to make sure everything looked good to be sent out. I compiled a news update every week of news events going on in Ethiopia to be sent out. I also got to post photos on their social media accounts.

Q: What was the environment like there?

A: It was so warm and so welcoming. Everybody makes you feel like you are part of team. My coworkers were super friendly and would always stop to say hello. It’s like a family. One of the best parts is you really feel like you’re making a difference.

Q: What is something you learned?

A: I learned that if whatever I’m doing in my personal life or career, if it isn’t making me as happy or fulfilled as what I was doing there— it’s not worth it. I’m doing it wrong and I should be somewhere else.

Q: Do you have any tips for college students who are looking for internships/jobs?

  • Start early. Do not wait until it he last second. Internship applications come out way earlier than you’d think. It can be totally stressful if you are not on top of it.
  • This is going to sound so cheesy. Instead of looking at an internship and thinking, “Why would they choose me?” Think, “Why would they not choose me?” Have confidence when putting together your application and doing your interviews. Then that confidence will come across and play a major role in getting the job.
