In your future job, you may very well be asked to do something that is outside of your comfort zone. This could be giving a presentation in front of a large group, working on a project with a large team, or going solo on a project. No matter what the task is, being able to step out of that comfort zone and complete it is essential for long-term career success. Here are 3 easy ways that you can start getting out of your comfort zone this summer, and expand your horizons and opportunities.
- Subscribe to a magazine/online newsletter you usually would not read
It can be a cooking magazine, a business one, or even a fun magazine. Expand your knowledge, learn new skills, and all the while, challenge yourself.
- Join an organization you normally would not
If exercise is a struggle for you, join a running group! Maybe you can never finish a novel, then join a book club. Perhaps you don’t like working with groups, then join any club or organization. Or even join a professional organization and gain access to contacts and build skills for your future. You will be building a community, bettering yourself, and could even learn a new passion you didn’t know you had.
- Take a class that challenges you
Pick a skill you want to learn that has nothing to do with your major! Employers will be impressed that you took the initiative to enroll in a course on your own. This is also a great chance to step out of the bubble that is your major and learn some great new skills. Here is a website with links to great skill building courses that are free!
